5 step life safety checklist for healthcare professionals
We know that your facilities are at their busiest right now as a result of the COVID19 pandemic, which means that your facility needs to be up to code now more than ever. It may seem like there is never enough time to maintain your life safety compliance when the projects seem to keep on coming, so here is a quick and easy checklist you can use to get a sense of where you stand on the road to long term compliance:
1. Seal the Deal
Any time a project punches a new hole in a fire or smoke barrier, it is critical that the penetration is properly sealed using a tested UL system. Your facility has hundreds of penetrations, and likely dozens of different technicians responsible for them. It can be easy to let firestopping slip through the cracks and allow your barriers to become non-compliant.
2. Don’t Dismiss Your Dampers
Your fire and smoke dampers are a vital part of keeping your facility safe and compliant, so they should not be ignored. They need to be inspected every four to six years, and any number of things can happen in that time that could stop them from working. Plus, any new dampers you’ve installed need to be re-inspected just one year after installation.
3. Let’s Clear the Air
Sanitization is more important than ever amidst a pandemic of this scale, and your mechanical systems should not get skipped over. Cleaning them is a valuable step towards having a safer and healthy facility. Making a habit of cleaning your ducts and replacing the filters will keep the air in your facility clean and uncontaminated.
4. Have a Plan
Do you know whether or not your life safety drawings are up to date? What about your emergency exit plan? Are your exit signs all working properly? You should be able to answer all of these questions confidently and know that everyone who enters your building will be safe in the event of an emergency.
5. Double Down on Doors
Your fire and smoke doors see extensive use, and can easily become damaged. They need to be inspected annually, and even a seemingly unimportant change to them can mean noncompliance. Don’t take any chances: make sure that every fire and smoke door in your facility meets NFPA standards.
